TreePeople – Keeping LA Shady!

TreePeople helps keep Los Angeles shady as in making sure LA’s trees are healthy and plenty! One of my family’s favorite place to hike, daydream, picnic and better yet, to volunteer at is this wonderful spot called TreePeople.
Located on 45 acres on Mulholland Drive in Coldwater Canyon Park in the Santa Monica Mountains. TreePeople is a non-profit organization in Los Angeles that offers outdoor beauty, as well as environmental education.
TreePeople was founded in 1973 by a young 18 year old activist named, Andy Lipkis. Andy started planting trees along with his friends a few years before heading to a summer camp in the mountains.
At this camp he learned about how smog drifting from the city was killing the trees in the mountains. That’s when he was inspired to help save the plants and trees in the Los Angeles area. That’s when he decided to develop TreePeople.
Today staff of TreePeople have planted more than 2 million trees throughout Los Angeles. Along with planting trees, the non-profit organization has developed the country’s largest environmental education program.
TreePeople offers a variety of events throughout the year for everyone to participate in. From volunteer park work days to hikes to workshops and training to special events and much more.
During the summer you will find performances from Once Upon a Canyon Night at TreePeople’s S.Mark Taper Foundation amphitheater. Once Upon a Canyon is operated by a volunteer theatre group and offer comedy nights, concerts, play readings and more. All proceeds supports this beautiful park.
We’re very lucky to live close to this magical place. We love to take family hikes with our dog and we also love volunteering during park work days. You can volunteer too! Just pick a park work day and register to volunteer at www.treepeople.org
During the park work day you’ll do anything from watering plants to spreading mulch to raking and basic cleaning. The work runs 2 to 3 hours and sometimes the work is hard, but it’s very rewarding to see what you’ve done to help nature.
If you get a chance to spend an afternoon here you’ll be inspired. You’ll be inspired to walk more, to water plants more, to learn about our environment more. I promise you’ll learn to appreciate our planet more.
TreePeople Park is located at 12601 Mulholland Dr. Beverly Hills, 901210. It’s truly worth the visit!
